Do you suffer from bloating, gas, abdominal cramps, chronic constipation or diarrhea?
Abdominal-CrampingFood sensitivity could be the cause. Within our intestinal tract there are tight junctions that can become compromised when we eat foods that cause inflammation. Over time when offensive foods are ingested it leads to intestinal permeability and substances leak into the bloodstream. When the substances leak into the bloodstream it can lead to further inflammation by triggering a delayed immune response that can manifest into not only abdominal symptoms but also systemic symptoms such as migraines and chronic sinus infections.
Often times when patients come in to see me they are guessing about what foods are causing their complaints. They remove the foods they think are causing the problems but they are still experiencing symptoms. There is a test from Cell Science Systems, called the ALCAT, which takes the guessing game away. The ALCAT test can measure up to 450 foods and substances that could be contributing to chronic inflammation and gastrointestinal discomfort. The analysis works by testing how your own white blood cells react to foods and other substances using a process called flow cytometry and a cell impedance methodology. This form of testing makes it possible to have a personalized approach to your nutrition plan.
Removing the inflammatory foods is only the first step. It is important to work with a qualified doctor that also understands ways to rebuild the intestinal tract. If your gut has become severely compromised, leading to a leaky gut situation it is key to reconstruct the lining and focus on a healthy micro-biota. Once this has been done patients can typically reintroduce about 85% of the inflammatory foods without discomfort or complaints.
I work with my patients to create a plan on ways to incorporate the new lifestyle changes into their current health model. In my clinical experience I have seen the quality of lives change for the better through a personalized nutrition plan and restoration of the gastrointestinal system. Patients whom have been suffering for years are feeling the freedom of being able to live their lives without the worry of bloating, gas, irregular bowel movements and migraines.
