For many of us, summer is still in full swing and we’re continuing to stretch into this expansive season. For others, it’s time to get the kids back to school and return to our routines. According to Northwestern Medicine, routines can have a very positive impact on our health!

When we create a routine, we’re essentially carving out time for and creating habits for the things we find important enough to do regularly. If you’re a massage member at The Wellness Center then you already practiced, in taking time for yourself.

For your inspiration, here are some regular routines that might help improve your overall health and well-being:

  1. Sleep – waking up and going to bed at roughly the same time each night can help ensure you’re getting enough sleep. This in turn impacts your mental clarity, mood, and energy levels.
  2. Exercise – having an exercise schedule or fitness program to follow along can help remove some of the mental hurdles that stop us from moving. If this feels daunting, try a daily movement plan in which you commit to a period of movement around the same time each day (walking, stretching, exercise class, etc). Find an exercise buddy! It is always more fun when you do things with others.
  3. Diet – it is often the times when we don’t have groceries on hand that we reach for quick and convenient snacks. Try creating a routine for grocery shopping in which you sit down to compile your grocery list before you hit the store each week.
  4. Self-Care – when we get busy, self-care often falls to the bottom of our to-do lists. Sign up for The Wellness Center’s Monthly Massage Membership. This keeps you accountable in your commitment to one hour of self-care each month (and it saves you money!).

Remember – you don’t need to overhaul your life in order to introduce one healthy habit. Trust in your intentions for care and know that these practices build upon themselves, ebb and flow. When we stick to our routines, we show up for ourselves. This in turn increases self-confidence and self-gratitude. We create more spaciousness in our lives by ensuring the important things are already planned for. Together, these things help to reduce stress and improve our overall quality of life.
