Back in December of last year, I was interviewed by DJ Turner on his Scaling Wellness Podcast. I had a great conversation with him about my journey into the Wellness business world. The interview recently came out, and I was struck by how many times in my life that I had to take a leap of faith, not knowing how things would turn out. My most recent leap was becoming a Foster Parent.

7 months ago, we welcomed a 3 year old foster daughter into our home. Having a 3 year old was a massive adjustment for us and it has been HARD, VERY HARD. Let’s be real, parenting is HARD. The greatest gift has been watching her come out of her shell, grow, and thrive. It is amazing how children can thrive when they have stability, love, security, and routine. It is hard to believe that she will be leaving to either go back to her biological parents or go to an extended family member in the next few months.

Everyone is asking, “how can you do it? How can you let go of a child that you have welcomed into your home and have fallen in love with?” It is easy. Studies show that kids do infinitely better if they are adopted by an extended family member. Given that our foster daughter has a wonderful Aunt that would love to take her in and adopt her, it puts my heart and mind at ease. Because I know that this is the best option for her, if her parents are unable to take her back.

Life is full of challenges, transition, and change. Throughout my life I have taken many leaps of faith, but not all of them turned out successful. That is the thing, life is about making mistakes and failure is necessary to the growth process. We are human and our humanness makes mistakes, no one is perfect. When you try to protect yourself or your loved ones from failure, you are actually doing yourself and your loved ones a disservice. Failure builds grit, character, and resiliency, and the younger you build these traits the better.
