Last month’s letter I wrote about life transitions, since my father recently passed.  It is interesting how life ebbs and flows and at different times, you have different interests and priorities. iStock_000046324760Large
I have owned The Wellness Center for over 14 years now, you would think that I would be living the most healthy and well-balanced natural lifestyle.  While, I have come a long way since my early 20s of eating Twizzlers and Hostess cupcakes… there is always room for improvement.  Sometimes I am very dedicated to eating heathy; sometimes I am very diligent about good self-care, others times I am more focused on exercising.  Many times, we are forced into eating well and taking care of ourselves because we just don’t feel good.
For the past 6 months I have had an annoying dry cough.  Finally, I decided to look more deeply into what was going on with my body.  Dr. Tiffany Binder our Naturopath had a hunch that my dry cough might be related to acid reflux, and suggested that I go on Prilosec (an over the counter drug for acid reflux) for 14 days to see if my dry cough subsided, amazingly it did.  I didn’t want to take Prilosec to just mask the symptoms of the cough, instead I wanted to get the bottom of what was causing the cough.  I met with Dr. Binder to see what she would recommend, of course she looked at a past food allergy report that I had done in 2009, and asked if I was eating almonds, dairy and gluten (3 foods that I am sensitive to).  Of course, I have been eating those items almost daily.
It was time to remove these items from my diet.  Letting go of eating certain foods is hard!  It is definitely a process, which includes a denial/mourning phase.  I started by eliminated almonds and dairy.  Low and behold, my cough disappeared.  I haven’t stopped eating gluten yet, but have definitely minimized eating it.
Once again my diet, like exercise ebbs and flows based on the time in my life.  I also decided to do a blood test that is called the Comprehensive Nutritional Panel.  It essentially finds out which vitamins and minerals you are deficient in.  Year after year, I am always told that I am deficient on Vitamin D… which was the case again this year.  In addition, I also found a few other minerals that I could use a boost in that would then boost my immune system.
Now I have a new found desire to focus more on my inner health, through nutrition and supplements.  If you have been thinking that you want to find out what might be affecting your health, now is the time!  Dr. Binder is such a gifted natural healer that I can’t say enough good things about what she does and the insight she brings to your health and well-being.  Click here to read more.
Hope you are enjoying your summer!
