The busy holiday season is over, now it is time to set new intentions for the year.  Is self-care on your list of things to focus on for 2015?  If so you may want to join us for the ultimate massage challenge.
In November I decided to challenge myself: come in weekly for massage for 4 consecutive weeks, sounds simple and easy right?iStock_000046324760Large
Not so fast, finding time for ourselves is a HUGE challenge.  Not only is it hard to make time for ourselves, when we make time we generally feel incredibly guilty and self-indulgent.  At least that is how I typically feel.
I know it sounds totally nutty!  I own a wellness center!  I should easily be getting a massage once a week.  I have a confession, for the whole 14 years I have owned The Wellness Center not once have to come in consecutively for 4 weeks in a row.
Well that was going to change…I decided to challenge myself and here is my honest account of doing the massage challenge.
Week 1: Resistance over pre-booking my 4 weekly massages.  The first thought that enters my brain, “can I really find the time to come in for 1 hour every week?”
I take out my calendar and pre-book my next 4 massages.  I instantly have resistance to this idea.  For whatever reason the idea of committing an hour to myself every week, feels daunting.  Book in advance?  What a novel concept.
I finally booked them out, even around Thanksgiving I was still able to come in weekly: It took me about 10 minutes to book 4 weekly massages, but as I booked my 4th massage I was filled with a sense of giddiness.  That I am actually committing to this fun challenge.
Week 2: Coming in for my second massage, I was just in to see Veronica the week before.  This week I am seeing Ashlyn.  As she is working on me, the first question out of her mouth, “when was the last time you got a massage?”  I proudly replied, “last week.” She said she couldn’t believe it, I was so tight!  And I was… its going to take more than just 2 massages to unwind an owner of a wellness center.  Sounds like an oxymoron.
Week 3: This week I am seeing Rosey for a massage and I am still pretty tight, but feeling good.  I also seem to be sleeping more soundly this week.  Or at least my husband has commented that I have been snoring more loudly than usual.  Not sure if that is a sign that I am sleeping better…
Week 4: This week for my last massage of the challenge, I decided to go all out and get a 1.5 hour hot stone treatment!  Yay!  First let me just say, that an hour and half goes by so quickly!  Where does the time go?  It was a great way for me to finish off my massage challenge.  Was it life changing and earth shattering?  No, but I will say that it felt good to take care of myself, especially during the crazy busy holidays.  I am definitely less stressed and more calm this year than I was last year at this time (read my blog about last year).  This year, I feel like I can roll with the punches more and let go of the holiday stress.
