A coach once told me once that people are like gardens. Land that is planted needs a fallow year where the ground isn’t tilled or planted, mulched or fertilized; it just sits there letting nature replenish its nutrients. Humans need this to…a break every 4-5 years from the hustle and bustle of work, school, projects and the day to
day busyness that comes with modern day life.
Life in America is way off from honoring or respecting a time of fallow. In our money driven culture, we value production (sometimes at all costs) and working long hours to keep our profit margins high. Don’t get me wrong, hard work is what built this great Country, but with hard work there also should be a time of rest. We have lost touch with the natural rhythms of Mother Earth and our own bodies.
If we continue to work at a high pace, year after year, decade after decade, our bodies will eventually break down. What you lose is your health, vitality and well-being. Once that is taken away, your quality of life goes way down. I don’t care how much money you have. I would rather be poor and in good health, than rich living in physical pain with no energy or zest for life.
Slowing down can be one of the hardest things to do, because working can be an addiction. One that is socially acceptable, which makes it even harder to break the cycle.
We here at The Wellness Center want to support you on your journey. To give you permission to slow down and break out of the vicious overwork and never ending consumer cycle that engulfs so many Americans.
When will your next “fallow” year be?
All my best,
