The one thing I know for sure, is that when you have a child your life naturally slows down.  I don’t do this every day but on days that I am “rough around the edges” I nap with my 10 month old daughter Maya and it is a gift.  Children do not move at modern day pace, they move to their own natural rhythms.  It is a beautiful thing when you slow down your life enough to read and respond to your child’s needs.
How is that we lose this natural pace as we get older?  Is it that our modern day lifestyle is not conducive to connecting to our natural day to day rhythms?  I would emphatically say “yes,” our modern day lifestyle is robbing many of us the ability to move at the speed of life, our own lives.
Individuals, who naturally move at a slower pace, are told to speed it up.  Those who have health issues are told to tough through it. Can’t sleep well?  Feel anxious?  Well we have a pill to help with that.  We are a quick fix culture, and these “quick fixes” don’t get to the root of our issues, but we bulldoze through and many times are just in survival mode.
How do we combat this modern day dilemma?  Give up our possessions and move to a monastery?  I don’t know about you, but I like living in America and enjoy the perks of modern day society. The key is to make sure you are making conscious decisions for your life, being the driver rather than the passenger.
If we want to slow down and create more spaciousness in our lives we have to become experts at saying no.  It can be as simple as saying “no” to subscribing to magazines that you feel like you have to read every month, or to saying “no” to the big house and nice car.  When you pare down your lifestyle, you naturally create more spaciousness and things become simpler.  I have been watching Downtown Abbey and all the energy that goes into maintaining this massive estate is mind boggling.  In many ways we are doing that here in the states with our large houses, furniture and cars.
This month create some space in your life and say “no” to something that is not working for you.
To your health,
