Spending the days with my 6 month daughter has been very rewarding and I can’t believe how quickly the time has come and gone. At the same time the days seem to go slow. It reminds me of my Peace Corps days, when I would do the same things day in and day out and there weren’t a lot of distractions in my life. There was plenty of time to just be with myself and my own thoughts. Being with Maya feels the same way.
My days for the most part are simple and uncomplicated, many would say boring. With an infant you can overwhelm them if you move too fast and do too much. Now I only plan one or two errands or activities per day and the rest is spent at home, playing and napping (trying to get Maya to nap). Making this shift was not an easy one for me, as I was super busy before Maya came into my life. Of course my identity was attached to this “busyness,” because that is what our society values, getting things done and being busy.
When I look into the eyes of my little daughter I know that there is nothing more important that I could be doing. So for now I relish and embrace the simple things: walks in the neighborhood, home cooked meals, having tea and good conversations with my husband and friends, and getting to bed early. I have been in the office 1-2 times per week for short stretches of time and look forward as Maya gets older to getting back into the “swing of things,” but for now all is in perfect order. I wouldn’t be able to do this without my fabulous staff, Maya and I are grateful.
Here’s to the simple things,
