In today’s world we are constantly bombarded with so many things: paying our bills, answering e-mails, keeping in touch
with family and friends, maintaining all the “stuff” we own that it can definitely get overwhelming. I find when I have too many things pulling me in several different directions that a lot of details end up falling through the cracks like, not taking the time to discuss things with my husband, forgetting to call my mother on her birthday, reconciling my bank statement, getting the oil changed in the car. You get the picture, but the details can be the most important part.
“The space and quiet that idleness provides is … paradoxically, necessary to getting any work done,” writes Tim Kreider in one of this summer’s most popular essays, “The ‘Busy’ Trap.”
When I start to feel like the details are overwhelming, then I know that it is time to change something. That I need to create spaciousness in my life to make sure that I get the details covered. Sometimes creating spaciousness means downsizing to a smaller house, hiring someone to help you cook, clean, etc., or maybe it is just letting go of social commitments that are draining your energy. Other times it is just about being zen with where you are at today, knowing that your house isn’t in perfect order, your front yard is full of weeds, and you still need to put together that baby book. It will all happen in due time. At the end of the day I would rather be spending quality time with my daughter then fretting over her baby book.
Here’s to creating spaciousness in your life so you can focus on the details.
To your health,
