This is a question that I often ponder when I start to compare my life with those around me, never a very healthy or productive exercise. Judging ourselves in relation to others feels like it is part of the human experience.
What is this desire for more, a new car, kitchen, furniture, clothes etc.? I find myself having to keep these desires in check. Now don’t get me wrong, splurging, re-decorating and buying new things is not inherently bad. It is when you feel like you absolutely need something is when wanting more becomes self-sabotage.
I always have to remind myself that with everything there are tradeoffs. The bigger house I purchase, the more work there is to keep it clean, not to mention the bigger mortgage. The more expensive and newer things that I buy, ultimately means that I am working more or longer to keep a certain lifestyle up.
Why do I still desire bigger, newer things? How much is enough?
Is this desire for more material goods part of our humanness?
It is such a dance of balance. Each day we have to be grateful for all that we have: our health, strength, homes, family and friends, because it seems that our human conditioning develops amnesia. If not reminded we easily forget and take for granted all that we have and all that is good in our lives. Wanting and longing for more moves to the forefront of our consciousness.
Much of this wanting comes from the massive marketing and advertising we are bombarded with on a daily basis.
I am not advocating that we stop improving our lives, and stop the flow of new energy into our lives. We are all inherently creative beings. I only propose that we re-evaluate this desire for more and transform it into a feeling of abundance and plenty. Next time when we desire something new we can ask ourselves, “is this expanding my creative field? Is this adding something to my life that I will love for years to come? Or is it just one more thing that in the long run will burden me with debt, maintenance, and overwhelm?”
Here is to living with exactly what we need and knowing that we need is always available to us.
To your health,
