The quest for the perfect body, the skinny jean physique is rampant, yet we live in a culture, where it is more convenient and easy to eat foods that are bad for us. We get caught up in yo-yo dieting and following the next big diet fad. Which not only sabotages our ability to lose weight, but it undermines our health and well-being.
What are the obstacles are in the way of losing weight and feeling good?
1) Innate Humanness- In many ways it makes sense because our natural human tendency is to move towards pleasure and avoid pain. Eating decadent foods gives us pleasure. It actually releases serotonin (feel good hormone) into our bodies.
2) Battle of Time and Society- We barely have time to eat, how in the world do we find time to shop and cook? In addition, we are constantly being sold and marketed to, society preys on our insecurities. We are the only ones that can stop the vicious cycle of needing to feed our insecurities with more stuff.
3) Self-Sabotaging Thoughts- – If you really want to lose weight and feel good for the long term, you need a clear, “WHY.” Why, you ask? Because you are embarking on a new journey, re-programming your body with new habits. Your mind hates and resists change. It will fight you until the very end. Unless you have a clear “WHY” it will be very hard to win the battle of the mind.
So how do we fight the battle? We need to arm ourselves with, massive heaps of self-awareness and commitment, buckets of patience and truckloads of self-acceptance and love.
1) Self-awareness – The first step towards losing weight is to start getting in touch with you. Many of us walk around we our head totally detached from our bodies. In the mornings when you first get up, rather than just start your day, spend 10-15minutes stretching and become aware of how you are feeling.
2) Commitment – Being healthy is a revolutionary act, because you have so many people and interests that don’t want you to succeed. We are constantly be marketed to feel inadequate and we are told that there is a magic something that will fix whatever ails us. In reality, we are the only ones that truly make us feel good. You have to be committed to feeling good, without commitment it will be too easy to lose the battle to food, time, society etc. Create a list as to why you want to lose weight. If the list is not compelling then then commitment won’t be there.
3) Patience – Losing weight and becoming healthy is not something that happens overnight. You are on a lifetime journey and battle. As you develop more self-awareness you will not only lose weight but start healing your body, mind and soul. Many people, when they encounter their first set back they quit. Setbacks are inevitable; they are part of the battle. If you fall off get right back on.
4) Self-acceptance and love – Love your body today: chunky, fat, skinny, whatever your body is, love it. You were only given one physical body in this lifetime and it is precious. When you feed it with unhealthy foods, you are ultimately feeding your emotional void, not your body.
